A Fall Full of French Horn Fun

Fall performances kicked off with a performance at the Hampton on August 15, 2018.

Oktoberfest started with a program on October 7, 2018 at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Merced. A little more Umph was added to the Um-Pah music with the acquisition of a Wagner Tuba by founder Ken Mackie.

We reprised our Oktoberfest program at Park Merced on October 17.

And we returned to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church to play at their Oktoberfest dinner on the 28th of October.

Second First-Annual Concert!

Cuivre! performed its Second First-Annual Concert on July 8, 2018 at the Livingston Baptist Church:

Fanfare from Rondeau by Mouret…………………………………. Jean-Joseph Mouret, 1729

The Suite of Symphonies for brass, strings & timpani No. 1 was written by Jean-Joseph Mouret, in the baroque era of music. The first movement of this piece, the rondeau, is widely known and commonly used in weddings, and notably on the PBS program Masterpiece Theater.

Als der gutige Gott vollenden wollt sein Wort………………… J.S. Bach

When the benevolent God wants to complete His word.

Transcribed by Ken Mackie

The lyrics of this hymn by Bach tell of the Annunciation.

Jerico……………………………………………………. Traditional Spiritual

Arranged by Ken Mackie

The song is believed to have been composed by slaves in the first half of the 19th century. Some references suggest that it was copyrighted by Jay Roberts in 1865. The lyrics allude to the biblical story of the Battle of Jericho, where the sound of ram horns caused the walls to come a-tumblin’ down.

Hallelujah…………………………………………………………………………. Leonard Cohen

Arranged by Michael O. Shaw

Composer Leonard Cohen has said of the song’s meaning: “It explains that many kinds of hallelujahs do exist, and all the perfect and broken hallelujahs have equal value.”

Fantasia on My Father’s World……………………….. Arranged by Ken Mackie

This arrangement of “This is My Father’s World” creates a swirling tapestry of sound as bits of the tune pass from horn to horn, woven with a moving counter-melodic line and echoes of the theme. If you listen closely, you’ll notice that the tune was adapted to represent the Hobbit’s Shire in the Lord of the Rings movies.

Pirates of the Caribbean……………………….. Klaus Badelt and Hans Zimmer

Arranged by Steven Verhaert

Here is a medley of themes from Walt Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” including the main themes “The Medallion Calls”, “The Black Pearl”, and “He’s a Pirate.”

America the Beautiful………………………………………………..Samuel A. Ward

Arranged by Kathie Mackie

“America the Beautiful” is an American patriotic song. The lyrics were written by Katharine Lee Bates, and the music was composed by church organist and choirmaster Samuel A. Ward. This arrangement was composed by our very own composer in residence, Kathie Mackie.

Stars and Stripes Forever…………………………………….John Philip Sousa

Arranged by Ken Mackie

John Philip Sousa, America’s “March King” composed over 130 marches. “Stars and Stripes Forever”, composed in 1896 became the official National March of the United States of America in 1987 by an act of Congress.

Cuivre! Members, in alphabetical order: B. J. Humpel, Adrienne Lopes, Kathie Mackie, Ken Mackie, and Shino Zamaripa.

Welcome Shino!

Cuivre! welcomes a new member in January of 2018, Shino Zamaripa. Shino’s husband saw us playing at the Merced Mall and told his wife about us. Shino hails from Japan, where she learned the horn in school. Fortunately, Cuivre! has a few horns available to loan to aspiring hornists who lack an instrument of their own, and Shino was able to join the group. She’s welcome for as long as she stays in the area!
